    Vervet Monkey Hunting In Africa

Experience the Thrill of Game Hunting in South Africa, Tracking the Vervet Monkey

The vervet monkey is a medium to large-sized black-faced monkey that can reach 30 miles per hour as it gallops on all fours. They are omnivores that feed on leaves, shoots and fruits, amongst others, while enjoying insects, eggs, and grubs. They are most active during the day and sleep in trees at night. Although it is not legal to hunt them in South Africa, vervet monkeys are a popular target for game hunters when hunting in Africa.

Vervet monkeys have established themselves throughout Eastern and Southern Africa, and they are known to inhabit bush, woodlands and savannah regions. They live in trees, in troops of up to 50 monkeys, eating, grooming and protecting each other. They are extremely fast-moving and run on all four legs, either on the ground or in trees. They leap from tree to tree and can quickly descend head first if needed.

Although vervet monkeys are omnivores, they eat mostly a vegetarian diet, including leaves and shoots, fruit, bulbs, grass seeds, and flowers. They supplement their diet with grubs, eggs, baby birds, insects, and even rabbits or hares.

Vervet monkeys have seasonal breeding patterns that may differ according to location, but mainly between April–June each year. Their gestation period is 163-165 days. Usually only one baby is born after the rainy season when food is readily available.

These little monkeys have four main predators, apart from man, namely leopards, eagles, pythons, and baboons. While vervet monkeys don’t readily attack people, they may become aggressive or bite in self-defence.

    Size and Appearance

When searching for vervet monkeys during your game hunting safari, look for a medium-large, black-faced monkey with a silvery-grey or greenish-olive body. Their face, ears, hands, feet and the tip of the tails are black, with a noticeable white band on the forehead. They have short whiskers. They reach 15-24 inches, with their tales’ length approximately 11-20 inches. The males are slightly bigger than females and easily recognized by their red penis and blueish scrotum. Their limbs are almost equal in length, and they carry their tails with the tip curving upwards.

    Hunting Methods

Hunting of vervet monkeys is illegal as they are protected by both national and provincial legislation, and injuring or killing them is a punishable offence. However, hunting vervet monkeys on a game hunting safari in other African countries is allowed. The best method to target vervet monkeys when hunting in Africa is to lie in wait for them at a waterhole they are known to frequent within their territory or to build a blind along the trail to the waterhole.

    Challenges and Rewards

A medium-large-sized monkey, the vervet monkey remains a popular specimen while on a game hunting safari. While hunting vervet monkeys is illegal in South Africa, they are targeted in other African countries. The challenge with hunting these little monkeys is their speed! They can change pace and direction quite quickly, giving the hunter an exciting hunting experience!

    Rifles and Requirements

An accurate rifle in the range of a .243 Winchester range works well when vervet monkey hunting in Africa. Ensure the rifle has an accurate scope with good quality ammunition. A bigger caliber rifle with a solid bullet can be used.
