Tips when Hyena Hunting in Zimbabwe

    • Spotted hyenas are nocturnal and are hunted at night from a blind, using the bait technique

    • Walk-and-stalk methods are also sometimes used when hyena hunting

    • The best time to consider hyena hunting is during the dry season that runs from June to August

    • Hyenas can become quite aggressive when wounded

    • Ensure that your shot placement is correct and spot on. A head shot will ruin the trophy, aim for a broadside shot behind the shoulder, into the heart and lungs for a quick death

    • When it comes to rifles, consider calibers such as the .308 or .30-06 with quality bullets of 150gm, which should get the job done

    • The Save Valley is 750,000 acres of prime hunting grounds, and home to a healthy population of Spotted Hyenas

Why is Hunting in the Save Valley Popular?

    • Boasting an area of 750,000 acres, the conservancy is popular in offering authentic style African hunting experiences.

    • The Save River runs through the area, offering a reliable water source that attracts a wide range of wildlife to the area.

    • The Save Valley offers free-range hunting, without internal fences within a large area.

    • The area is known for its abundant wildlife, along with the sheer number of species available.

    Health, Safety, And Vaccination Tips

Staying healthy and safe is just as important as good gear when planning your hunting safari.

    • Vaccinations: Check with your doctor for required and recommended shots, such as yellow fever, hepatitis A/B, tetanus, and typhoid.

    • Malaria Prevention: Malaria is a risk, particularly in the Zambezi Valley and Hwange. Taking prescribed anti-malarials, wearing long sleeves in the evenings, and using bed nets is standard practice.

    • Water Safety: Drink bottled or purified water and avoid ice in off-grid areas.

    • First Aid: Pack a personal kit for small injuries, pain relief, and blisters.

    • Insurance: Pick travel and medical coverage that includes remote evacuation, since quick access to hospitals in outlying areas can be challenging.

Hyena hunting is a thrilling adventure well worth pursuing in the large, unfenced Save Valley, especially with the option of adding exciting night critter species to the mix!
